Replacing Electric Window Motors

(1989-1993 Thunderbird / Cougar)

So you’re you just went out to roll your windows up (or down) and it doesn’t move. Well, don’t panic!!! It’s not that big of a job to remove and replace an electric window motor. All you need is a few basic hand tools and about 20 minutes of time. Of course, you will need to check the switch to be sure it isn’t bad first. But if you have determined that the switch is OK, then here’s all there is to it!
First you will need to get the follow tools out:
•1 – #2 Philips-head screwdriver
•1 – 1/4″ or 3/8″ Drive Ratchet
•1 – 3″ Extension to fit ratchet
•1 – 5/16″ Deep-well Socket
•1 – magnetic pickup tool (optional)

Open the door. Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw that holds the black trim piece located on the front edge of the door.

Next remove the Phillips screw in the bottom corner of the door panel (next to the courtesy light). (Photo)

Also remove the one holding the switch plate to the door panel. (89-91 only). (Photo) In 92-93 this switch plate is held on with snap connector on the top edge on the panel. To remove these, put gentle pressure on the top of the panel pushing up!

After removing the switch plate, remove the Philips screw in the door panel under the switch plate. (Photo) The door panel should now be loose.

Once all of the screws are removed you can pull up on the door panel and it will come loose from the door. Pulling the door panel forward (toward the front edge of the door) the door handle should easily slip through the small hole. Disconnect the wiring to the courtesy light and set the door panel aside until ready to re-assemble.

Next remove the stereo speaker to gain access to the inside of the door.

Unplug the electrical connection to the motor. (Photo)

boltsThen remove the three 5/16″ bolts that hold the motor in place.

NOTE: Be sure to reach you hand inside the door to hold the motor so it doesn’t drop into the bottom of the door or hit the glass.

At this point you may drop a bolt or two inside the door. This is where it will be handy to have the magnetic pickup tool….

To install the new window motor, just reverse the process. Just make sure when you install the new motor that you tighten the bolts evenly and slowly so that you do not damage the gear on the motor as it comes in contact with the window regulator in the door.
